Machu Picchu in the mist

Aguas Calientes is this small place nestled, hidden, in the mountains. And that’s all you can see – Mountains. Towering all around you. It might have been claustrophobic if it wasn’t so beautiful,

Slightly obsessed whilst in the research phases of my next longer-term film project. I could spend forever with these beautiful animals. Now, to get that funding secured to make this film happen 🐰 - a favourite still from yesterday out on the hills. #wildlifephotography pic.twitter.com/sytoBKg3xs

“So if I want to get the shot of the jeep crossi “So if I want to get the shot of the jeep crossing the river… you’re gonna have to go over, drop me off, and leave me over here…”

Iceland feeling kind of wild. The plans for the first photo in my head was epic drone in settled snowy landscapes. A breeze. But no. It was just us in the Thórsmörk valley, limited visibility - driving through rivers and the snow and wind coming thick and fast. I’m sitting in this huge jeep, cosy. And then I come to the realisation that I’m going to have to go out in this to shoot the jeep from the outside.

I’ve found with most of my @flashpack shoots that the weather usually comes to thwart me at some point - rain and mist at Machu Picchu, swirling snow at the base of Fitz Roy, but Iceland was a whole other beast. The whole shoot was challenging from a “my lens is covered in snow… again”and “I’m getting battered by wind” kind of way. Shooting photo and video is a lot at the best of times, and I only do it for Flashpack because I like them. But anyway, I embraced it, and became a master at wiping my lenses every 2 seconds, and really capturing the feeling of the trip - wild, but beautifully so. With a few serene moments here and there.

Winter, for me, has usually been about hibernation Winter, for me, has usually been about hibernation - slowing down, being cosy. But that has shifted so much over the last few years, and as I embark on a pretty full-on winter shoot over this next month, I’m reminding myself that there’s absolutely space to do both. For the slow winter moments and for the harsh, brutal creativity in the cold that can often only be really appreciated after the moment has passed.

- a slightly different perspective on one of my favourite photography experiences to date. We were freezing, and it took me hours and hours to warm up after we got back inside, but we were so lucky to have the sky light up like this on the last night we were able to chase them.

It’s been a few weeks of Scottish adventure, cur It’s been a few weeks of Scottish adventure, curling up in the van - sometimes hiding from the -9 temps outside, working in cafes for hours and hours, and sometimes venturing out into the snow and reminding my legs what hills actually are.

These are some of my favourite photos from the last week - plodding walk-ins, exciting climbs of new grades, all the snack breaks, many shivering, miserable belays and not an alpine start in sight. As much as I was pretty grouchy in some of these moments, editing these photos is a reminder that the camera almost always enhances my experience outdoors, even if it adds a little extra weight to an already heavy bag.

P.s bonus shot of the boot that fell off a guys foot (mid-lead) from Mess of Pottage which we had to retrieve for his second to bring up 👀

As a chronically stubborn night owl, the mornings As a chronically stubborn night owl, the mornings are always a bit of a haze, no matter all of the years I tried to reset my sleeping pattern. So being in Iceland during its shortest days was actually really lovely - long dark mornings and pastel light for a few hours. Sleepy dark afternoons and evenings.

It wasn’t exactly the easiest for seeing everything we wanted to see and doing lots of photography, but that didn’t matter. It meant I enjoyed those daylight hours even more - the gentle light on distant mountains, watching the waves crash on the black sand, the sea turn to ice as it touched land, the bits of glacier on the beach. Just a joy, and I can’t wait to go back, chasing both that golden light, and perhaps those green lights in the darkness.

This pretty much sums up my partner’s psyche for This pretty much sums up my partner’s psyche for winter this season. It’s both daunting and exciting that I’m up in Scotland all winter, working, shooting, climbing and generally just trying to get my winter legs back after a lot of days and weeks and months in the edit.

Winter is this juxtaposition of wanting to hibernate, but simultaneously knowing that some of my favourite photography and film experiences happen in the snow, in the ice. So I’m going to try and balance the both over these next couple of months.

I didn’t quite realise how many projects I worke I didn’t quite realise how many projects I worked on last year until I sat down to make this showreel, a year trying not to create content, but instead capturing relationships to the outdoors, and how being outdoors shapes us, makes us want to protect our natural spaces, and how these experiences create connections and communities. Tiring shoots, wonderful collaborations and long months in the edit leading to final. finalfinal. and finalfinalfinal. exports.

A huge thank you to @jessielphoto, @emmacrome , @lynders, @neonstash , @jonathandoylemedia, @samwalker.uk @flashpack, @merrell, @mpbcom, @sidetrackedmag, @kendalmountainfestival, and so many others for supporting and working alongside me this year. Here is to a new journey with collaborations with more talented folk on beautiful projects 🌞

It kind of feels like I’ve been relearning every It kind of feels like I’ve been relearning everything about landscape photography over the last few months. Trying to put aside some influences that I’ve picked up on what makes a successful photo, whilst holding onto the inspirations that drive me. It’s so easy to know what does well online, and try to replicate it because it’s often just natural response to the creativity we are surrounded with.

So, I’ve been trying to feel my way with it a little more and leading with a bit more emotion and instinct rather than going by the rules. And I’m already finding it so much more fulfilling, even if this particular landscape left me feeling a little lost. A million and more compositions infront of me and having no idea what to focus on.

This is one of my favourite wider compositions, just after the sun had set at Breiðamerkursandur. Just sitting with some broken pieces of glacier, before they got washed out to sea.

Another year trying to figure myself out, as well Another year trying to figure myself out, as well as another year of working in this wild and chaotic career, pouring myself into the creativity of camerawork and getting far too emotionally invested in absolutely everything.

It feels bizarre to think I started off 2022 in one of my worst depression episodes of my life, and ended it in a gentle contentedness after many months of building up my confidence and trying to embrace uncertainty. It will always be this, the ebbs and flows, so I’m still working to remind myself to celebrate the good, in whatever form it takes. Happy New Year to everybody, and I’m hoping that this year brings many forms of joy. And lots of rad film projects 🌞

Ahhhh, our next Ice Mile showing is in January! We Ahhhh, our next Ice Mile showing is in January! We have a really exciting showing in Sunderland, at the @firestationsun at 7:30pm on the 26th January. It’s pretty scary to have this showing at such a large venue but it looks like it’ll be a pretty electric event. And weather depending we’re hopefully going for a group sea swim beforehand 🌞

@fenwickridley and @becca.harvs will be doing a Q+A and we have the wonderful @gillymcarthur is hosting the screening - what an absolute powerhouse of a team to ask questions and learn from.

1/4 of the ticket sales will also be going to @beachaccessnortheast - a charity who work to give independence and choice to disabled elderly people across the North East Coast.

Just a huge thank you, always, to everybody’s support of this film. The response to it has already exceeded all expectations ♥️
